How To Write Content For a Website
Now that you have created your website, the next part of our discussion will be how to write content for a website. This may be difficult at first, but as you write more, it will become easier.
Your site’s content will have a specific purpose and must provide your reader with value. We will also discuss how often you should write and how to promote your website.
This may help you whether you are writing articles, making videos, or creating podcasts. These ideas can be used for any of them.
What is the purpose of your article?
When writing an article for your website, there are really only two types.
- A general article is written to inform your readers. Such as this article. For someone that is just starting to look at creating a website, this could be valuable and free information. I will not have any links to products on my articles, I may link them to other articles or to product reviews, but I will not generally promote a product on them.
- The second type is the product review. This is to inform the readers about a product, good or bad. You want to provide an honest and as complete as a possible review.
Although, I may add links to make it easy for my readers to find specific sites or services that I mention. If the reader goes there, what do I gain? Many times, just silent thanks, but if they found real value, they will come back and read other articles and reviews.
As they keep coming back and start to trust me, they may click on my affiliate links and make a purchase. (affiliate links will be covered in the future, but it is a way to earn money)
Take a look at my reviews or reviews on other sites. Some will encourage the readers to try the product and others will discourage the reader. Just because you can promote a product and make money on it, doesn’t mean you should give it a positive review.
If your reader purchased the product after reading your review and doesn’t like it, do you think they will be back? Will they leave a negative comment about you somewhere else? Take care of your readers and they will take care of you.
Why is good content important?
I have stated some reasons why good content is important above. If you want your readers to keep coming back, purchase products, or even tell others about your site, you will need good content.
Good content is also consistent. You will want to create a basic template for your articles and reviews. This will make it easier for your readers to glance at your content to see if they want to take the time to read it. If it doesn’t look interesting to them or laid out well, do you think they will stick around long?
What is good content?
Good content will provide value to your reader. If you are knowledgeable about a subject or have researched it thoroughly, your readers can tell. But if you try to write an article without any real knowledge, your readers can tell this too.
Make sure you check spelling and grammar on all of your articles. I do not read too far into an article that is full of spelling or grammatical errors. These can confuse your reading and once they start tripping over words, they won’t stick around to try and figure out what you are saying. I know errors slip through once in a while, even for me, but you should be able to catch most of them before you post the article to your site.
By now, you should already have an idea for your website or your niche. Have you researched articles on other websites? Can you tell who has put time into their articles and who has not? You don’t need to read the entire article to know how much someone may know about what they are writing.
Did you even make it to the end of the article? Why or why not?
Take notes for future reference. If you like the site, bookmark it! What did you like or not like about the site? General layout? Text fonts? Images? Ads? Etc…
How often should I add content to my site?
This is up to you, but I would suggest for a newer site, write an article every two or three days. This will help build your site up. If you have good content, your reader will want to read your other articles. The more you have, the more chance you have to engage your readers.
Make sure you are writing good content and not just writing for the sake of writing!
Once you have over thirty articles on your site, you can slow down to just once a week if you want. Once you get the momentum going, it may be hard to slow down. By that time, you will have a list of articles that you want to write about and may not want to only put out once a week.
I find it easier to make a schedule and stick to it. For example:
- Monday write an outline for an article
- Tuesday write the article
- Wednesday review and publish the article
- Thursday write an outline for an article
- Friday write the article
- Saturday review and publish the article
This is only an example. You should be able to write the outline of an article in just a couple of hours after you have done a few of them. I usually like to write the article, then review it the next day before I publish it on my site. I may want to add something else before I put it on my site.
How Do I Let People Know I have New Content?
Once you have created new content, you will need to let people know. There are several ways to do this:
- Paid advertising – pay per click (PPC) is one way to bring traffic to your site. Search “google ads”, “yahoo ads”, or “Bing ads” and you can read about each of their programs. You can even pay to place ads on Facebook or other social media sites.
- Facebook – either your personal Facebook page or create a free business page
- Twitter – you can reach a lot of people quickly, but remember you are limited to 140 characters. I heard that Twitter may be increasing this to 280, but it has not been done yet.
- Pinterest – you can create graphics and advertise there, it’s like sending thousands of free postcards.
- Google+
- Myspace
Some sources of free advertising
This is only a partial list, there are many other sites that you can post information and link back to your site for free. Some social sites will delete your post if you are spamming. You should be safe to direct people to your site, then your readers can click your affiliate links on your site.
Once you have your site up, you want to start generating an email list. This way you can let your readers know when you have a new article or even provide periodic tips to help them. This is another free way to advertise.
However, you advertise or promote your site, it is usually best to use your site as a home base. Direct your traffic here and then let your readers click on the products that they are interested in. They may come to your site to read one thing, then read something else and purchase a product from that review.
Final Thoughts
I have discussed a lot here; the purpose of your content, how to write good content, how often to add content, and how to let people know about your content.
As you can see, there is more to writing for your site than you may have thought about. Always remember why you are writing. Your readers will appreciate good content that they find value in.
